Making things go bump in the night usually has a very different meaning in Call of Duty – you’re usually surprising an opponent with a well-placed grenade. But Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’s Season 06 – The Haunting has been adding supernatural elements to Multiplayer, and Call of duty: Warzone since last month to help give that phrase a delicious double meaning.
The Haunting in Call of Duty
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’s Season 06 – The Haunting has been taking the game to spooky new heights. Players have been treated to a zombie outbreak in Call of Duty: Warzone’s Vondel map, a limited-time Zombie Royale mode, spooky map reskins in Multiplayer, and Halloween-themed twists on classic Multiplayer modes. But what has really captured the attention of fans are the crossover characters and themed weapon packs based on iconic franchises.
Notable Crossover Characters
One of the most exciting aspects of The Haunting in Call of Duty is the arrival of playable Operators from iconic franchises. Players can now take on the role of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, Skeletor from “Masters of the Universe,” Ash from “Evil Dead 2,” and even Diablo IV’s Inarius. These crossover characters bring a whole new level of excitement and nostalgia to the game.
Game Development and Collaboration
Infinity Ward Production Director Dino Verano shares that bringing these iconic characters to the game has been a massive undertaking but an enjoyable one. Working with legendary partners and being able to bring it all to life in a Call of Duty way has been a fantastic experience. Verano also recounts the collaboration process with Todd McFarlane, highlighting his great storytelling abilities.
Iconic Franchises
The Haunting in Call of Duty features themed weapon packs based on iconic franchises like Doom, Hellsing, Evil Dead 2, and Diablo IV. The Tracer Weapon Bundle from Doom adds the original game’s long-range shotgun and chainsaw to the mix. The Hellsing Bundle allows players to step into the shoes of Alucard, the vampire turned vampire hunter. The Evil Dead 2 Operator Bundle features the iconic character Ash Williams, and the Diablo IV Operator Bundles bring characters from the game to life.
Unintended Side-effects
Creating content based on iconic characters may come with its own challenges. The team working on the game had to navigate the quirks and demands of the different franchises. For example, the team had to ensure Ash from Evil Dead 2 always had blood on his face, and they even made it reactive so that it gets bloodier as he goes. Additionally, the Skeletor Bundle unintentionally led to constant laughter and impressions of the character echoing through the hallways.
The Haunting Continues
Season 06: The Haunting will continue in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Warzone until the end of October. Players are encouraged to check it out and grab the Halloween crossover pack of their nightmares.
