Riot has introduced the latest addition to the League of Legends roster: Hwei, the visionary. This new mid-lane mage comes with a complex kit centered around painting and a brooding, emo design.
In the game’s lore, Hwei is an Ionian champion who uses art to confront criminals and provide solace to their victims. Haunted by overwhelming creativity and a troubled past, it’s no surprise that Hwei sports a brooding design. Interestingly, Hwei shares a history with Jhin, one of League of Legends’ most art-obsessed champions.
From a gameplay perspective, Hwei possesses a complicated kit that will appeal more to high-level players than casual fans. With three different spellbooks comprising a total of 10 unique spells, Hwei’s abilities draw comparisons to marksman Aphelios’s famously intricate kit.
Hwei can choose from three spellbooks: Disaster, primarily for dealing damage; Serenity, offering support and healing abilities; and Torment, providing crowd-control abilities. Hwei’s ultimate, Spiralling Despair, can attach to an enemy champion to create an AOE zone of Despair, slowing and dealing magic damage to enemies within the area.
Available as part of patch 13.24, which is currently live on the PBE for testing, Hwei’s first skin will be part of the seasonal Winterblessed skin line.
Hwei made its debut at the League of Legends 2023 Worlds Finals, where Korea’s T1 defeated Weibo Gaming 3-0 to secure the team’s fourth world championship title.
In other League of Legends news, the popular Netflix show Arcane, based on the League of Legends universe and lore, recently announced that its second season is set to arrive in 2024.
