I find it fascinating that Battlefield 1, released in 2016, is still experiencing some issues. Despite being regarded as one of the series’ better entries, it’s not immune to problems. One such issue is Error Code 1, and we’re here to help you resolve it in Battlefield 1.
Battlefield 1: How to fix “Error Code 1 an Unknown Error has Occurred”
Prior to the disaster that was Battlefield 2042, the World War One shooter propelled the series above Call of Duty’s Infinite Warfare. Nevertheless, even with its remarkable legacy, challenges have continued to surface. It’s a pleasant surprise that people are still playing Battlefield 1, and I’m thrilled about that.

I’ve encountered the “Error Code 1 an Unknown Error has Occurred” in Battlefield 1 before, and fixing it can be quite a hassle. Finding an exact reason to assist with troubleshooting is challenging, other than venting on Reddit. Fortunately, after compiling information from various sources, I’ve come across a few solutions that have worked for me in the past. If you give them a try, they might also help you.
How to fix the error code
Thankfully, as the game has progressed over the years, players have devised more solutions to these issues. This means you have several options to try before resorting to reinstalling the game.
- Restart the game: Most games these days, when encountering issues like Error Code 1, simply need to be restarted. More often than not, this resolves the problem. However, to increase the chances of smooth gameplay, restart your PC or console as well.
- Play on a different server: I’ve noticed that the error doesn’t occur at all when playing on the official DICE server. If you’re using the Server Browser, consider playing on the vanilla server first.
- Clear Cache: For console users, unplug your system and wait for a minute. Then, reboot the console and start up Battlefield 1. If all goes well, the error code should no longer appear. For PC users of the EA App, press the three lines on the top left. From the drop-down menu, select Help, then App Recovery, to open a window allowing you to clear the cache. On Steam, you just need to verify the files to clear the cache. In your library, right-click the game and press Properties. From the options on the left, hit Installed Files, and then Verify integrity of game files.
- Make sure your internet is working: Since this problem usually affects matchmaking, try resetting your internet connection. A wired connection has often resolved most of my matchmaking issues, so you might experience a similar result.
