Unlocking Mounts in Final Fantasy XIV
Mounts are a game-changer in FFXIV, allowing you to travel much faster, especially once you unlock the ability to fly. But before you can ride your favorite mount, you need to go through a series of quests to unlock the ability to use mounts.
When Do You Get A Mount In Final Fantasy XIV?
You acquire your first mount during an FFXIV side quest that becomes available as you progress through the main story quest. But before you can get a mount, you must follow these steps to reach that quest.
Reach Level 20
In order to obtain a mount in FFXIV, you must first reach level 20. If you’re struggling to level up, consider doing leves, dailies, and catching up on your class quest. Always prioritize completing your main story quest and then explore other leveling methods.
Accept The Company You Keep
The Company You Keep is a level 20 quest that is part of your main story. During this quest, you are introduced to the Grand Companies of Eorzea and must choose which Grand Company to join. Your choice can be changed later, so don’t worry if you’re unsure – just read their descriptions and choose your favorite.
Grand Company Quest
- Wood’s Will Be Done
- Till Sea Swallows All
- For Coin and Country.
After choosing your Grand Company, you must complete your first Grand Company quest. The specific quest name depends on your Grand Company, but it’s a straightforward task. Upon completion, you’ll officially be part of that Grand Company. Make sure to keep the Company Seals obtained from this quest, as they are needed to get a mount.
My Little Chocobo
The quest that unlocks your first mount is called My Little Chocobo. Once you join a Grand Company, this quest will become available and can be tracked by clicking on the quest in the top left of the screen.
Purchase Chocobo Issuance
As part of the quest, you’ll need to visit the Grand Company Quartermaster to purchase the Chocobo Issuance specific to your company. If you’re short on seals, you can acquire more by participating in hunts.
Chocobokeep
After obtaining the Chocobo Issuance, locate the Chocobokeep near your Grand Company and interact with them to name your Chocobo and receive a whistle. Don’t forget to talk to the Chocobokeep three times to complete all the necessary actions.
Use Whistle
To summon your Chocobo for the first time, locate the Chocobo-shaped whistle in your inventory and use it to automatically mount your Chocobo. Afterwards, consider placing the whistle on your hot bar for quick and easy summoning.
Summon Again
If you need to summon your Chocobo again or dismount for the first time, refer to the Mount Guide. Keep in mind that a Chocobo mount is different from a Chocobo companion, which requires a separate quest to obtain.
Can You Use Mounts Without Getting a Chocobo?
No, the Chocobo quest unlocks the ability to use mounts. Even if you have unlocked or purchased mounts before finishing the Chocobo quest, you won’t be able to use them until the quest is complete.
