After five years of support, Dead Cells is finally hanging up its hat, with no further content updates planned following the release of Update 35. The game’s developer, Motion Twin, and Evil Empire announced the news via a post on the game’s Steam page and on the Evil Empire Twitter account.
The decision to end content updates for Dead Cells came as a preventative measure to avoid the game’s gameplay feeling stale and to ensure that it could go out on a high note. Motion Twin stated that last year’s Return to Castlevania DLC was the peak of content for the game, and they didn’t want to overextend and diminish the unique charm of Dead Cells by continuing to add content.
While Dead Cells won’t be receiving any new content, the game is not completely done for. An animated series and a board game are in the works, and Motion Twin teased that the game’s protagonist, the Beheaded, may be “appearing in another world.”
Regarding Update 35, Motion Twin mentioned that it is still not up to release standard at the moment, but asked players to keep an eye out for updates in the future.
While it’s sad to see that there won’t be any new Dead Cells content in the near future, the quality of the past five years of post-launch updates is certainly worth applauding. It seems that for Motion Twin and Evil Empire, quitting while they’re ahead is a good move.
