Soapbox features allow our writers to share their opinions on various topics. Today, Jim explores the depths of a game that initially went overlooked…

In the past year, I decided to take a break from my usual game and try out a lesser-known indie title that caught my eye with a discount on the eShop. This game, ‘Hollow Knight’, offered a unique experience that I immersed myself in for a while before moving on. Despite enjoying the gameplay elements like movement and combat, I didn’t initially grasp the full potential of the game.

Recently, news of a sequel to ‘Hollow Knight’ sparked discussions about its predecessor being a standout metroidvania title. This renewed interest prompted me to revisit the game and uncover what I may have missed the first time around.

Upon re-entering the game, I focused on exploring every corner of the vast world of Hallownest. Instead of rushing to complete objectives, I took my time to appreciate the intricate design and lore hidden throughout the kingdom. This slower approach allowed me to truly understand the depth of the game beyond its surface mechanics.

I am a sucker for a map marker.

By strategically marking areas of interest on my map, I was able to delve deeper into the lore and worldbuilding of ‘Hollow Knight’. The rich narrative and emotional depth of the characters resonated with me on a profound level, adding a new layer of appreciation to the game.

After investing over 20 hours in my second playthrough, I completed the main storyline of ‘Hollow Knight’, though I am tempted to return for further exploration and uncover hidden secrets. This journey of rediscovery opened my eyes to the true strength of the game: its intricate depth and immersive storytelling.
