Dragon Quest XII Update: Honoring Toriyama’s Legacy
Celebrating Dragon Quest Day, series creator Yuji Horii addressed fans’ concerns about the future of Dragon Quest XII following the passing of artist Akira Toriyama.
The highly anticipated game was officially announced to be in development in May 2021, with Toriyama having already contributed artwork alongside Koichi Sugiyama. However, Toriyama’s death and the lack of updates on the next installment in the beloved RPG series left fans apprehensive about its development.
Horii took to Twitter on Dragon Quest Day to share an update, offering reassurance to fans that more news about Dragon Quest XII is on the horizon.
”Thank you so much to everyone for all the congratulations,” Horii wrote. ”I’m sorry for the worry about Dragon Quest 12, but I was just having a meeting about it. I can’t say much yet, but I want to make something worthy of the posthumous work of the two people who passed away. I’ll do my best!”
Amid concerns over a recent company restructuring that led to franchise producer Yu Miyake stepping down to lead Square Enix’s smartphone division, internal delays have likely contributed to the absence of any meaningful Dragon Quest XII updates for almost three years.
The upcoming mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series, titled The Flames of Fate, is expected to be a global release. However, no official announcement regarding platforms or release dates has been made by Square Enix yet.
