Oldest Trick in the Book – Fallout 76 Quest Guide
After completing Seeking Shelter in Fallout 76, Audrey Stolz will give you another quest called Oldest Trick in the Book. This quest may pose more challenges, but with this guide, you will learn how to successfully complete the Oldest Trick in the Book quest for Fallout 76.
As mentioned, the Oldest Trick in the Book quest takes place after you’ve finished Seeking Shelter. Once that quest is completed, head over to Dark Hollow Manor and talk to Audrey to initiate the Oldest Trick in the Book quest. During the conversation, you will learn that Hugo’s wife, Cassidy, has been taken, and he needs your help to find her. Audrey will provide you with the location of Cassidy, eliminating the need to search for her on your own. Your first task is to deal with the cultist who has kidnapped Cassidy.
After speaking with Audrey, you will receive a marker indicating the cult’s hideout in Old Crimora Mine, located in the southern part of the world. While the map can serve as a reference point, the game will guide you to the exact location.
Approaching the mine, you will encounter cultists in the vicinity. Make sure to eliminate them before entering the mine, as they can be formidable adversaries. If you have powerful weapons like the Red Terror LMG, dealing with the cultists should be relatively easier.
Once the area is clear, be sure to retrieve the Cultist Garments from a shed near the mine’s entrance before venturing inside.
Navigating the Mine
Fortunately, the mine is not overly extensive, and the pathways are relatively straightforward, allowing you to reach your destination quickly. As you reach the top section of the mine, search for an NPC named Elder Prepper, whose location will be marked on your map.
Upon encountering the Elder Prepper, you will need to make a crucial decision – either shoot him or provide him with the password. If you opt to engage in combat, brace yourself for a tough fight as other NPCs will join in. Alternatively, offering the correct password can result in a more passive resolution. The password required is: “To peak past Pepper you must pester Pepper’s peers to apprise Pepper’s Password to pass past Pepper’s pier.”
It is essential to note that providing the password may not work if you have not discovered it beforehand. Search for a bed in the upper section of the cave to locate the password.
In the event of Neurological Warfare being triggered during the quest, and you decide to engage in it and return, all NPCs might attack you, regardless of whether you are disguised or not. To avoid this, progress past the Elder Prepper before participating in the event, ensuring a smoother experience.
Regardless of how you resolve the situation with the Elder Prepper, the quest will progress, leading you closer to finding Cassidy.
Locating Cassidy
Upon clearing the obstacles in your path, a new section of the mine will be accessible, pointing you towards Cassidy’s whereabouts. As you explore this new area, you will encounter prison cells, with the primary objective being to retrieve Cassidy.
Following Cassidy’s recovery, you will encounter the cult leader, Alex, in the main area of the mine. Alex will express her disdain towards Hugo for his actions, sparking a confrontation where Alex commands her followers to attack. Deal with the attackers swiftly.
This segment of the quest has been known to have bugs. If the quest fails to update after defeating all attacking cultists, consider switching servers or restarting the game or quest to rectify the issue.
Finishing up and meeting Hugo
Upon resolving the conflict, your final objective is to exit the mine and locate Hugo, who can be found back at Dark Hollow Manor. Speak to Hugo to conclude the quest successfully, earning a significant amount of XP and the Cultist Monarch Outfit as rewards.
Decide Hugo’s fate in Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, as your choices may lead to unexpected outcomes.
