Dragon Age: The Veilguard Developer Discusses New Game’s Companion Focus

Discovering the Uniqueness of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Companions

BioWare has been vocal about the significance of the companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, piquing the curiosity of many fans who are eager to learn more about what sets these NPC party members apart. Creative Director John Epler sheds light on what makes the new characters stand out.

Emphasis on Character Development

“Dragon Age has always been about characters,” Epler emphasized, “but to some extent, it has felt like we stumbled upon that. In Inquisition, the protagonist plays a pivotal role in the story, but this time, we wanted to showcase a narrative where saving the world is impossible without these characters. Furthermore, we aimed to provide them with individual story arcs that complement the main storyline, enhancing the deep storytelling experience that our fans cherish.”

While some may find certain aspects of Epler’s statement peculiar, such as the notion of luck surrounding the importance of characters in Dragon Age, it is important to consider the context. This shift in focus towards companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard marks a departure from previous installments, where the main storyline predominantly revolved around the protagonist.

Empowering Companions with Agency

The companions in Veilguard appear to possess a greater sense of autonomy compared to their predecessors in the Dragon Age series. Epler elaborated on this by stating, “Rather than merely assembling a group of individuals who obey your commands, you are forming a family. This familial bond lies at the heart of what defines the Veilguard, emphasizing the journey of uniting this diverse group as they work together to save the world.”
