Exciting Updates From Comic-Con International 2024

For those eagerly anticipating the annual extravaganza that is Comic-Con International, also known as San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC, there’s a notable change this year. Unlike previous years since 2019, there won’t be a virtual component to the event. This means fans will need to find alternative ways to stay abreast of all the latest announcements and news coming out of one of the biggest gatherings for fandom. But fear not, as Polygon is here to keep you informed.

Marvel’s Anticipated Panel

Marvel and DC are poised for a significant presence at Comic-Con 2024, with Marvel facing some pivotal questions. Following setbacks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including disappointing box office results, discussions around “superhero fatigue,” and the legal issues involving actor Jonathan Majors, the company is using Comic-Con as a platform to engage with fans. The opening of Deadpool & Wolverine on July 25 is expected to be a success, but fans are eager to learn about Marvel’s upcoming projects and any potential changes to Phases 5 and 6. Will Kang be replaced by Doctor Doom? Will a new actor step in for Majors? The answers may be revealed at this year’s panel.

DC’s Unveiling

DC underwent its own overhaul in 2022 when James Gunn, known for Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, assumed leadership of the company’s film and television endeavors. Although Gunn will be absent from Comic-Con due to work on his version of Superman, Warner Bros. will showcase projects like The Penguin and My Adventures with Superman. While there won’t be a formal presentation from DC, fans can expect excitement surrounding new DC Comics merchandise. However, a surprise announcement from DC during Comic-Con is always a possibility to maintain buzz.

Beyond Marvel and DC

Aside from Marvel, DC, and Disney (which holds announcements for its D23 expo), Comic-Con will feature panels on various media franchises, including Star Trek, Doctor Who, Transformers, Walking Dead, and Alien. Discussions will also cover upcoming seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and much more.
