After multiple delays, Adult Swim’s adaptation of Junji Ito’s landmark horror manga Uzumaki is finally set to premiere on Sept. 28 during Adult Swim’s anime-focused Toonami block. The four-episode miniseries has been highly anticipated since its announcement in 2019.
The adaptation follows the story of Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito, two high school students facing disturbing incidents linked to a mysterious “spiral curse” in the quiet Japanese town of Kurouzu-cho. They must navigate through the horrors to save themselves and their loved ones.
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama (known for Mushi-Shi and Flowers of Evil), the Uzumaki anime is being produced by Japanese animation studio Drive (To Your Eternity season 2). The score is composed by Colin Stetson, known for his work on Hereditary.
While there have been several anime adaptations of Junji Ito’s work in the past that missed the mark, fans are hopeful that Nagahama’s Uzumaki will finally live up to expectations. The true verdict will come with the series’ premiere.
Uzumaki will debut on Adult Swim on Sept. 28 and stream the following day on Max.
