Netflix’s Bioshock Film Adaption Sees Budget Cuts
Netflix’s highly anticipated film adaptation of Bioshock is still in the works, but fans may need to adjust their expectations. The movie, which was once planned to be a grand spectacle, has undergone significant changes due to budget cuts. During a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, the film’s director and producer shared insight into the revised scope of the project.
According to a report by Variety, producer Roy Lee provided details during Collider’s Producers on Producers panel. Lee mentioned that the transition in leadership at Netflix has led to a shift in the project’s direction. With Scott Stuber being replaced by Dan Lin, the emphasis on lavish spending for a large film lineup has been toned down. This change has directly impacted the budget allocated for the Bioshock film, prompting director Francis Lawrence to describe it as a “more personal film.”
Speaking on the budget adjustments, Roy Lee remarked, “The new regime has lowered the budgets. So we’re doing a much smaller version. … It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”
The collaboration between Netflix, Bioshock’s publisher Take-Two Interactive, and Vertigo Entertainment remains crucial in bringing the Bioshock film to fruition. Francis Lawrence will serve as director, Roy Lee as a producer, and Michael Green has been announced as the film’s writer since August 2022.
