Eight years later, acclaimed 2D Soulslike Salt and Sanctuary just got a rock-hard Randomiser mode

Salt and Sanctuary Receives Surprise Update with Tough New Randomiser Mode

Salt and Sanctuary, developed by Ska Studios, has proven to stand the test of time as an enjoyable, Dark Souls-inspired 2D action-adventure game. Despite being eight years old, the game received a surprise update this week, introducing a challenging new Randomiser mode.

Originally released for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016, Salt and Sanctuary aims to capture the essence of From Software’s acclaimed dark fantasy RPG formula in a 2D realm. Players take on the role of the Saltborn, exploring a mysterious kingdom filled with enemies and formidable bosses to conquer.

The latest update for Salt and Sanctuary introduces a new Randomiser mode, offering players three options to increase the difficulty. The options include Item Randomiser, Monster Randomiser, and Scaling Monster Randomiser, each providing a unique challenge for players to tackle.

The Item Randomiser shuffles non-essential items throughout the world, while the Monster Randomiser mixes up enemy and boss encounters without altering their stats. The Scaling Monster Randomiser not only changes enemy placements but also adjusts their stats for a more challenging experience. Players on the Salt and Sanctuary subreddit are actively sharing their experiences with the new Randomiser mode.

In addition to the Randomiser mode, the latest update for Salt and Sanctuary includes bug fixes, Turkish localization, and support for 4K/UHD resolution options. The update is currently available for PC players on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

While Salt and Sanctuary received a sequel in 2022 titled Salt and Sacrifice, some changes to the formula did not resonate as strongly with fans. However, the original game continues to be praised, with Eurogamer describing it as “shockingly good.” The recent update provides players with a reason to revisit the game and experience the new challenges it offers.
