Sega Reports Increase in Entertainment Division Revenue
Sega recently released its Q1 financial report for the three months ending 30th June 2024. While overall net sales saw a 3.2% decline compared to the previous year, the company’s entertainment division, which includes video games, experienced a significant boost of 34% (via GamesIndustry.biz).
The spike in revenue has been largely attributed to Sega’s acquisition of Rovio, the well-known creator of the Angry Birds series. Since acquiring Rovio in August 2023, Sega’s revenue for this quarter reached 8.7 billion yen.
One of the key contributors to this surge in revenue was the success of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. The enhanced release of this game sold an impressive 500,000 copies in just three days. Additionally, the ongoing success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise continues to drive profits for the company. With the third film slated for release in December 2024, Sega anticipates continued strong financial performance.
The Persona series also played a significant role in boosting sales, with Persona 5 Royal contributing to an additional 790k units sold. Since April 2022, the Persona series as a whole has now sold approximately 9 million copies. Sega also highlighted the continued success of several “repeat titles,” including Unicorn Overlord from Vanillaware, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth from the Yakuza series, and Persona 3 Reload, all of which continue to sell well.
While overall profits saw a decrease, attributed to the exceptional launch of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken in the same period last year, Sega remains optimistic about its future. Apart from the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the company has Sonic X Shadow Generations on the horizon. Additionally, for players without a Switch console, Atlus’ upcoming IP Metaphor: ReFantazio and the mobile game Sonic Rumble are in the pipeline.
