Review – Tomba! Special Edition (PlayStation 5)

Revisiting an Old Gem

Tomba!, also known as Tombi!, is a timeless platform adventure game that first graced the PlayStation console. Revisiting this classic title has been an exciting journey for me, as it holds a special place in my gaming memories. Despite the slight confusion with the game’s name, the version I have on my PlayStation 5 displays it as Tombi! Special Edition, but for consistency, let’s refer to it as Tomba!

In Tomba! Special Edition, players take on the role of a feral pink-haired wild child on a mission to retrieve his grandfather’s stolen bracelet from evil pigs that have overrun the land. The gameplay combines platforming elements with RPG features, offering a unique and engaging experience. While it may seem like a standard platformer at first glance, there is much more depth to uncover beneath the surface.

One of the standout features of Tomba! is its blend of platforming with RPG elements. In addition to navigating the challenging terrain and tossing enemies around, players will encounter NPCs in need of assistance. Completing tasks rewards players with AP (Adventure Points), which can be used to progress through the game. The inventory system allows for the collection of quest items, usable tools like feathers for quick travel, and various weapons and attire to customize gameplay.

Upon meeting the wise 100-year-old man in the game, players gain the ability to unlock chests that were previously inaccessible. This mechanic encourages exploration and backtracking to discover hidden treasures and rewards. Tomba! is renowned for its colorful and quirky world, filled with eccentric characters and imaginative landscapes, such as the forest of laughing and crying mushrooms.

While Tomba! may not be a lengthy game, its compact world is brimming with secrets and hidden events that add depth to the overall experience. Players seeking to fully complete the game will need to engage with its intricate terrain and quirky mechanics. Despite its challenges, Tomba! remains a charming and enjoyable blast from the past.

Enhancements in Special Edition

The Tomba! Special Edition introduces several new features to enhance the gameplay experience. Notable additions include a rewind feature for players facing tough challenges, enabling them to quickly resume gameplay without lengthy reload times. The ability to save progress anywhere removes the reliance on designated save points, providing greater convenience for players.

While the game’s graphics have aged gracefully, players can now choose from different display methods and retro borders for a nostalgic touch. The option to switch between original and remastered soundtracks caters to varying preferences, ensuring an immersive audio experience throughout the game. Additionally, the inclusion of a museum featuring original artwork and developer insights adds a touch of nostalgia for fans.

Is Tomba! Special Edition worth revisiting? Absolutely. This charming retro game exudes personality and remains a standout title from the 90s era. Its blend of platforming, RPG elements, and quirky design make it a hidden gem that stands the test of time. Whether you’re reliving nostalgia or experiencing it for the first time, Tomba! offers a delightful and memorable gaming experience.
