Diablo 4 Tempering Guide: How It Works

What Tempering Does to Gear

Tempering is a new crafting system in Diablo 4 that allows players to add special affixes to their gear in a controlled manner. This system gives players the ability to create custom gear that enhances their power for endgame content.

Tempering provides class-specific bonuses to gear that are always relevant. However, this system can be confusing for new or returning players. This guide will explain how Tempering works and how players can make the most of it.

Where to Find Temper Manuals

Temper Manuals are part of the regular drop pool for all World Tiers. The rarity of these manuals is influenced by the current World Tier, with harder Tiers offering rarer drops. Nightmare Dungeons, World Bosses, Uber Bosses, and other content are more likely to drop powerful Temper Manuals.

How to Temper Gear

Learning a Temper Manual

When you acquire a Temper Manual, you can learn the recipe by right-clicking on the item. Each manual contains different affixes, but the application of these affixes is random. Tempered Affixes are indicated by an anvil icon in the item’s tooltip.

Tempering Slots on Gear

The number of Tempered Affixes that can be applied to a piece of gear depends on its quality and sub-quality. For example, Rare, Legendary, and Sacred Legendary items have one Tempering slot, while Ancestral Legendary items have two. Normal, Magic, and Unique items cannot be tempered.

Temper Durability

An item without any Greater Affixes has seven rolls available for applying Tempered Affixes. This includes initial rolls to set the Tempered Affixes and rerolls after applying them. The item’s Temper Durability is shown in the tooltip. Each item’s Temper Durability increases with the number of Greater Affixes present on the item.

Rerolling Tempers

Players can reroll each slot’s Tempered Affix up to five times before the slot is permanently locked. It is advisable to prioritize the most-needed Tempered Affix before moving on to the second slot. Holding off on Tempering until endgame, when you have access to Legendary versions of Temper Manuals, is recommended for higher affix values.
