Apple Requires Patreon to Use In-App Purchasing System
Apple announced last year that Patreon must utilize their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing methods from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024.
This mandate has significant implications for creators:
- Apple will impose a 30% App Store fee on all new memberships acquired through the Patreon iOS app, in addition to any purchases made in your Patreon shop.
- Creators currently on first-of-the-month or per-creation billing plans will need to transition to subscription billing in order to continue earning through the iOS app, as Apple’s in-app purchase system only supports this billing model.
It is important to clarify that Apple’s fee will only impact new memberships purchased through the iOS app starting in November, and will not affect existing memberships.
