In the lead up to its launch, Black Myth: Wukong PS5 reviews were scarce. While initial reviews for the PC version were promising, there was a lack of information on how the game would perform on the PS5. Now that the game has been released, players are able to see how it runs on Sony’s console.
How does Black Myth: Wukong PS5 perform?
Although not as drastic as the Cyberpunk 2077 launch, Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 does have its performance issues. According to Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie, players are treated to stunning visuals but may encounter some hiccups that could affect their gameplay experience.
The performance issues in Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 seem to arise from how the game handles its performance across three graphics modes. Quality, balance, and performance modes all exhibit similar settings, but each comes with its own set of problems that may need to be addressed in future updates.
As Mackenzie explains, the quality mode aims for around 1440p resolution upscaled to 4K. While the game looks sharp when still, motion can reveal its limitations. With issues like motion blur and distortions in post-processing effects, the mode tries to maintain 30 fps but fluctuates between 31 and 36 fps.
The balance mode opts for a simpler 1080p resolution without any dynamic adjustments. This decision leads to softer visuals with less detail. Although targeting 45 fps with a cap at 60, players may experience frequent stuttering during gameplay.
Performance mode sticks to a fixed 1080p resolution but utilizes FSR 3 frame generation to achieve 60 fps. While it mostly hits the target frame rate, there are instances of stuttering and drops to 40 fps during intense moments on screen. The use of frame generation also introduces input latency, providing a visually smooth experience at 60 fps but with the input response of a 30 fps game.
