Google Pixel 9 Review

Google has unveiled its latest lineup of smartphones, with the Pixel 9 positioned as the base model in the series. While the Pixel 9 comes with some improvements over its predecessor, the Pixel 8, such as increased memory, a new ultra-wide sensor, and enhanced AI capabilities, the $100 price hike may give some consumers pause. Priced at $799 for the base model, the Pixel 9 offers a fresh aesthetic and features that may appeal to certain users. However, with the Pixel 9 Pro bringing additional hardware upgrades, a $240 Google One AI Premium subscription, and a similar form factor at $999, the Pixel 8 faces tough competition.

Google Pixel 9 – Design and Features

The Pixel 9 continues Google’s refined design approach seen in previous Pixel models. The new camera bar design, reminiscent of a pill-shaped raised plateau on the back of the phone, offers a fresh look compared to the Pixel 6. The device feels sturdy yet lightweight, with a metal frame that curves smoothly around the corners. The slightly larger 6.3-inch display allows for slimmer bezels, but also results in a taller and thicker device compared to the Pixel 8. The flat metal sides contribute to a more substantial feel, resembling recent iPhone designs.

The Pixel 9 boasts Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, making it durable and water-resistant. However, the glossy back, available in black, white, pink, or light green, is prone to fingerprints. Button placement, with power and volume buttons on the right side, offers a tactile experience but may not be ideal for photography enthusiasts. Additionally, the inclusion of dual speakers and a shift in the SIM card tray location contribute to an improved user experience.

The Pixel 9’s display offers sharp visuals with a 1080 x 2424 resolution and the ability to switch between 60Hz and 120Hz for optimal performance. The device features a fingerprint scanner beneath the display and a front-facing camera integrated into the screen. Notable upgrades include a satellite SOS function for emergency situations, although this feature was not available during testing.

Google Pixel 9 – Software

Running on Android 14, the Pixel 9 offers a simple and sleek user interface. Google promises 7 years of updates for the device, focusing heavily on AI capabilities. The device presents a range of features centered around AI, with mixed results in terms of consistency and performance.

The Pixel 9’s gaming and overall performance are commendable, thanks to the Tensor G4 chip and increased memory capacity. Fast connectivity, a long-lasting battery, and impressive display quality add to the device’s appeal for both casual users and gamers.

Google Pixel 9 – Cameras

Equipped with a main and ultrawide camera setup, the Pixel 9 offers impressive photography capabilities. The main sensor captures detailed and vibrant images, while the ultrawide lens complements it well. Despite some limitations with digital zoom, the device excels in various lighting conditions and shooting scenarios.
