Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Review

Returning to the Fray

I found myself smiling as I played through the opening level of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s campaign, alongside my squadmates. The feeling of being back in this futuristic grimdark world after over a decade was invigorating. Space Marine 2 breathes new life into the squad-based shooter series effortlessly. The environments are captivating and diverse, the action-packed gameplay is satisfying, and the sense of camaraderie while fighting alongside your team, whether they are AI companions or friends, is exhilarating. While it may not revolutionize the genre, Space Marine 2 provided me with hours of enjoyable gameplay.

The Familiar Setting

The original Space Marine drew inspiration from Gears of War, and its sequel continues in that vein. Featuring heavily armored characters fighting off aliens with guns and Chainswords, the similarities are clear – but entirely welcome. Space Marine 2 leans into the rich lore of Warhammer 40k to establish its own identity. The campaign can be played solo or co-op, with additional modes that encourage players to upgrade weapons and customize armor between rounds, ensuring players keep coming back for more.

Into the Action

Jumping back into the boots of Demetrian Titus, the stalwart protagonist from the first game, players are thrust into a century-later setting without missing a beat. The updated story keeps things engaging as you traverse various planets with your squad, encountering new enemies and experiencing unexpected twists in the narrative. While the story is compelling, a touch of humor could have added more depth to the overall serious tone.

Facing New Foes

Replacing the Orks from the original, the Tyranids serve as humanity’s latest adversaries in Space Marine 2. These alien creatures present a variety of challenges as players battle through the campaign. From colossal beasts to swarming hordes, the enemy types keep the gameplay engaging and intense.

Weaponry and Action

The game excels in gunplay and melee combat, allowing players to customize their loadout and swap weapons throughout missions. Engaging enemies results in satisfying explosions of blood, and executing foes provides strategic benefits like shield regeneration. The fluid movement of the protagonist adds to the overall immersive combat experience.

A Feast for the Eyes

The sequel departs from the drab color palette of the original, offering vibrant and visually striking environments. Players will traverse alien landscapes and urban areas filled with intricate details and stunning imagery, showcasing the power of the current console generation.

Expand Your Horizons

Aside from the campaign, Space Marine 2 offers additional modes like Operations and Eternal War. These modes provide new challenges and opportunities for players to further customize their experience, offering a variety of class options with unique abilities for engaging gameplay.

Personalization and Progression

Players can earn currencies to upgrade weapons and armor with cosmetic items, adding a layer of personalization to their characters. Unlocking emblems, charms, and colors allows for creative expression and enhances the overall gameplay experience.
