Hi-Rez Studios Announces Employee Layoffs
Hi-Rez Studios, the developer behind popular games like Smite 2 and Paladins, has made the difficult decision to lay off an unspecified number of employees in a move aimed at securing the company’s long-term success.
CEO Stewart Chisam revealed the layoffs in a detailed statement shared on social media, explaining that the job cuts are part of an internal reorganization and reprioritization. Unfortunately, this restructuring will have a larger impact on individuals in marketing and publishing roles, as well as teams within Hi-Rez’s Evil Mojo, G&A, and Titan Forge divisions.
Chisam expressed his understanding of the real human impact of these layoffs, recognizing the dedication and talent of the affected employees. He took personal accountability for the decision, acknowledging it as a reflection of his leadership.
The strategic review at Hi-Rez Studios will now focus exclusively on Smite 2, with small teams continuing to provide light updates for Paladins and Smite 1. The company’s immediate priority is the development of gameplay features for Smite 2, including new modes, gods, and quality enhancements, leading up to its free-to-play launch next year.
While Smite 2 was released earlier this year as a paid early access title, player reviews on platforms like Steam remain mixed. Chisam emphasized the studio’s commitment to creating an exceptional gaming experience for the community and ensuring the game’s longevity.
Despite the challenges presented by these changes, Chisam remains optimistic about the future of Hi-Rez and Smite 2. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from players and fans, emphasizing the dedication and passion of the affected employees.
2024 has been a challenging year for the gaming industry, with thousands of job losses. This latest announcement from Hi-Rez Studios adds to this trend, highlighting the ongoing turmoil within the sector.
