Starfield: Shattered Space Review – IGN

Exploring Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC

Following the high-speed excitement of Starfield’s base game, the Shattered Space DLC brings a refreshing shift that adds depth to the game. The new Va’ruun homeworld offers a substantial amount of quest content, revolving around a captivating story of a futuristic theocracy that blurs the lines between science and religion. However, while this expansion introduces new questlines, it lacks significant new features that truly redefine the gameplay experience.

Embarking on the DLC with my level 46 Starborn character, I delved into the mysteries of the Unity, encountered the Phantom enemies with their eerie energy fields, and explored the unique challenges posed by the Va’ruun homeworld. The introduction of the Phantom enemies and the immersive setting of Dazra added layers of intrigue to the gameplay.

A World of Mysteries and Intrigue

The city of Dazra on the Va’ruun homeworld stands out with its alien architecture and rich lore. Despite the catastrophic events that have shaped the city, the inhabitants offer a warm welcome to outsiders, showcasing Bethesda’s signature approach to faction dynamics. The lore surrounding the Va’ruun and their religious beliefs adds depth to the overall narrative, although it may feel overwhelming at times.

As you navigate the quests on the Va’ruun homeworld, you are immersed in a focused experience that keeps you grounded in one location. The absence of interstellar travel and space combat in the expansion may feel limiting, but it allows for a more detailed exploration of the Va’ruun culture and their society.

Experiencing Familiar Yet Engaging Quests

While some quests in Shattered Space may feel reminiscent of past Bethesda games, the expansion offers a fresh take on familiar tropes. Engaging in missions to track down fugitives, uncover traitors, and rescue hostages adds variety to the gameplay. The introduction of new weapons and craftable grenades adds a layer of customization, although they may not drastically alter your playstyle.

Combat encounters with Zealots and other adversaries provide a decent challenge, especially in the final battle. The improvements in gameplay mechanics and the addition of new features make Shattered Space a worthwhile revisit for Starfield players looking to delve back into the game.
