Former Blizzard boss’ new studio reveals debut tabletop-inspired game Sunderfolk

The Debut Game from Dreamhaven: Sunderfolk

Sunderfolk marks the first release from Dreamhaven, the game company established by former Blizzard executive Mike Morhaime.

Founded in 2020, Dreamhaven comprises two studios: Moonshot and Secret Door, with Sunderfolk falling under the latter. This tactical game draws inspiration from tabletop RPGs and offers a unique gameplay experience controlled through your phone. Take a look at the gameplay trailer below:

Embark on an adventure through the Sunderlands in Sunderfolk, where you’ll explore diverse landscapes, engage in battles with monsters, and interact with charismatic animal residents. The game aims to replicate the essence of a traditional tabletop experience while enhancing accessibility.

With the use of a phone or tablet as your controller, players can manage inventory and partake in combat. The game encourages couch co-op, rekindling the spirit of traditional game nights.

Combat in Sunderfolk follows a turn-based system where players select from a deck of skill cards for attacks. Fate Cards introduced each turn add an element of unpredictability, requiring players to strategize, customize their decks, and collaborate with others for victory.

Mike Morhaime expressed his enthusiasm for Sunderfolk as a game that brings players together around enjoyable experiences. He praised the game for its beauty, charm, and the epic moments it creates where players directly engage with each other to develop strategies or celebrate victories.

Chris Sigaty, the head of Secret Door studio, shared the team’s inspiration from tabletop games, highlighting their commitment to making such experiences more accessible to a broader audience.
