Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Review

Netflix’s Tomb Raider Fails to Excite

After watching the premiere episode of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, I was on the verge of giving up. It’s not that the Netflix animated adaptation is terrible, but the initial 35-minute episode didn’t capture my interest. Unfortunately, the following seven episodes didn’t improve the situation. The storyline lacked depth, the animation felt mediocre, attempts at humor fell flat, and the characters were not given enough substance. While the show offers globe-trotting adventures and some enjoyable action sequences, it falls short in engaging the audience. If there’s a second season, I won’t be eagerly awaiting its release.

Exploring Lara’s Emotional Saga

The Legend of Lara Croft introduces us to a version of Lara Croft who is burdened with emotional trauma rather than establishing her legendary status. Portrayed by Hayley Atwell, Lara is depicted as a headstrong archaeologist who embarks on numerous adventures but struggles to connect with her friends on a deeper level. Haunted by the deaths of her father and mentor, she carries a heavy emotional load throughout the series.

Accompanied by characters like Jonah, Zip, Sam Nishimura, and Camilla Roth, Lara’s journey unfolds as she faces off against the villain, Charles Devereaux. Voiced by Richard Armitage, Devereaux’s quest for power quickly descends into campy territory, undermining the serious tone of the show.

Global Adventures and Lackluster Animation

As Lara pursues Devereaux and the mythological stones, the show takes viewers to various locations worldwide, including Croft Manor, China, Paris, and Mongolia. While the change in scenery keeps the series visually engaging, the animation quality leaves much to be desired. The backgrounds appear static, and the overall look of the show feels rushed and unpolished.

Furthermore, the plot becomes increasingly nonsensical as the series progresses, failing to deliver a compelling storyline. Despite its flaws, the show’s action sequences and occasional humor attempts provide some entertainment value.
