PowerA XP-Ultra Multi-Platform Wireless Controller Review

PowerA XP-Ultra Controller – Design and Configurations

PowerA takes on Microsoft’s own Xbox Wireless Controller with the XP-Ultra Multi-Platform Wireless Controller, offering direct wireless connectivity with Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. The controller also works natively with other devices such as Android, Windows 10/11, and certain smart TV platforms. Featuring a 4-in-1 modular design, including a detachable full-sized grip and mobile gaming clip, the XP-Ultra aims to distinguish itself in a competitive controller market. However, some users may find that PowerA has not quite reached the level of the best controllers currently available, especially considering its price point.

PowerA XP-Ultra Controller – Design and Configurations

Included in the box are the controller, a detachable dual-articulating clip, a 9.8-foot braided USB-C to USB-A cable, a quick start guide, and an offer for a free month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for new users. In its full-sized configuration, the XP-Ultra closely resembles the Xbox Wireless Controller and weighs about 10.6 ounces, only slightly heavier than the latter with two AA batteries. Notable differences include a built-in 2000 mAh rechargeable battery with a battery status button, a charge level indicator, a power/program LED, and a gaming clip slot. On the rear of the controller, there is a factory reset hole, a second gaming clip slot, a program button, and two advanced gaming buttons that can be programmed on-the-fly. The lower grip can be detached, resulting in a smaller, lighter gamepad.

The XP-Ultra offers a textured lower grip for better grip, and the back of the detached mini-pad also features a similar texture for enhanced comfort. The controller’s four adaptive rumble motors, two triggers with magnetic impulse, and quality build contribute to a satisfying gaming experience. However, the absence of contactless Hall Effect technology in the analog sticks, which prevents drift and prolongs lifespan, is a notable omission.

PowerA XP-Ultra Controller – Software and Customization

The PowerA Gamer HQ app, available for Xbox and Windows PCs, allows users to update firmware, test controller responsiveness, and calibrate inputs. While the app may not always be the most user-friendly, it offers comprehensive features like button remapping directly to the controller.

PowerA XP-Ultra Controller – Features and Performance

The XP-Ultra connects wirelessly to Xbox consoles, functioning similarly to a first-party controller and recognized in the Xbox Accessories app. However, connecting to a PC requires USB unless an Xbox Wireless Adapter is used. Bluetooth connection is available for Android devices, but limitations exist for PC and iOS devices. Performance-wise, the controller feels responsive and well-built, although top-heavy in certain configurations.

In terms of battery life, the XP-Ultra offers up to 60 hours when connected to Xbox or PC with the Xbox Wireless Adapter, and up to 40 hours when paired with an Android device over Bluetooth. However, the controller may face connectivity issues in certain setups, affecting its overall performance. The PowerA XP-Ultra multi-platform controller is available for $99.99 from retailers like Amazon or directly from PowerA’s website.
