Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Embracing Diversity and Inclusion
Addressing the online backlash surrounding the main characters of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, franchise boss Marc-Alexis Coté emphasized the importance of telling stories with diverse and inclusive characters. Despite criticism, Coté defended his team’s work on Shadows, especially regarding the inclusion of Black samurai Yasuke.
The Power of Representation in Video Games
During an event in London, Coté highlighted the significance of representing diverse perspectives in video games, acknowledging the challenges presented by the current cultural landscape. He explained that Assassin’s Creed has always been about exploring various facets of human history, embracing the richness of different perspectives without compromise.
Coté emphasized the importance of authenticity and respect for diverse viewpoints in storytelling. From fictional characters like Naoe, a Japanese woman warrior, to historical figures like Yasuke, the African samurai, Shadows aims to reflect the complexity of our shared history through its narrative.
“We’ve consistently introduced protagonists from diverse racial, ethnic and gender identities.”
He pointed out that the franchise has a history of featuring protagonists from diverse backgrounds, such as Altair, Aveline de Grandpré, and Ratonhnhaké:ton. Coté reaffirmed the commitment to inclusivity grounded in historical accuracy and a desire to explore different perspectives.
Navigating Online Criticism and Creative Challenges
Coté acknowledged the challenges faced by creative teams amidst online attacks and divisive comments. Despite the difficulties, he commended the Shadows team for staying true to their vision and the core principles of Assassin’s Creed.
“Our creative teams face lies, half truths and personal attacks online.”
By choosing characters like Naoe and Yasuke as protagonists, Coté believes that the game expands the narrative landscape, offering fresh viewpoints while respecting historical contexts. He reiterated that Assassin’s Creed serves as a platform for entertainment, dialogue, and understanding.
Defending Creative Freedom and Diversity
In the face of threats and censorship, Coté urged creators to stand firm in their commitment to tell meaningful stories that inspire and unite. He emphasized the importance of challenging divisive narratives and celebrating the diversity of human experience through creative expression.
“When we self-censor in the face of threats, we hand over our power, until freedom and creativity wither away.”
Ultimately, Coté expressed gratitude to the players for their support and enthusiasm, emphasizing that their feedback fuels the creative process. He concluded by affirming his belief in the transformative power of creativity and the role of storytelling in shaping the future of entertainment.
