PS5 Pro Box Doesn’t Carry the 8K Tag, But it Does Boast a Brand New Label
Just like the standard PS5, the PS5 Pro has also moved away from the elusive ‘8K’ label that Sony initially used to promote its consoles back in 2020. Earlier this year, the company quietly removed the 8K tag, likely realizing that achieving true 8K gaming on a console is still a distant goal. Fans who got their hands on the PS5 Pro quickly noticed the absence of the 8K label.
The PS5 Pro now sports a new label on its box that features a phrase many could not have imagined seeing on a Sony console: ‘DISC-FREE Console.’ The box proudly showcases the Pro’s digital-only status, with a symbol of a crossed-out disc to emphasize this change. This new feature was highlighted in a recent discussion on the ResetEra forum.
While the PS5 Pro does have disc drive support (available for separate purchase), it does not come with one pre-installed like the standard console. This shift by Sony is in response to the increasing trend towards digital game sales, which now dominate the PlayStation market.
Historically, most PS5 units sold have been disc editions. Whether gamers prefer physical discs or digital downloads, they appreciate having the flexibility to choose between the two options when selecting a console.
