Review: NYXI Warrior Bluetooth Controller – A Great GameCube Pad For Switch, With The One Big Quirk

For those who appreciate retro gaming and the nostalgia of old consoles, there are numerous retro-style controllers available for the Switch. However, most of them are limited to just a new design and color scheme, without offering the modern features we’ve come to expect. Nyxi’s Warrior Bluetooth Controller aims to cater to GameCube enthusiasts while also providing a fully functional Switch pad that rivals Nintendo’s Pro Controller.

With its customizable options and impressive features, this controller pays homage to the GameCube pad and gets a lot of things right. But does it meet the needs of a wide range of players? And can it truly stand in for a Pro Controller?

NYXI Warrior Bluetooth Controller: Design

Prior to receiving a review sample from NYXI, we had the option to select a variant. We chose the classic Purple edition, but the controller is also available in Black or Orange. While the Silver option is missing, the Purple pad matches the original console quite well.

In terms of appearance and feel, NYXI has done a commendable job of capturing the essence of the GameCube controller while adding its touch. Slightly wider and heavier than a GC pad at 241g, it feels like a premium product, justified by its $69 price tag. Despite its cost, the controller offers a good balance of features for the price.

The controller features Hall Effect sticks, analogue triggers, six-axis gyro, HD rumble, and programmable back buttons and turbo functions. The only thing missing when compared to a Switch Pro Controller is an NFC reader for amiibo. The package includes two USB-A to USB-C cables, a wireless receiver for the ‘Cube’s controller port, and various components for customization, such as an additional C-stick and replacement stick surrounds. Swapping components is a bit challenging but ensures they stay in place securely.

In addition to the standard features, there’s a backplate provided to replace the programmable buttons on the rear, ideal for tournament settings. The back buttons are ergonomically placed under your middle fingers and can be easily ignored if not needed. The face buttons, unlike the GC pad, use ‘clicky’ microswitches, providing a different tactile experience. The rolling D-pad ensures smooth directional changes, particularly beneficial for fighting games.

NYXI Warrior Bluetooth Controller: Performance

When paired with the Switch, the Warrior functions similarly to a Pro Controller with comparable battery life. However, the different ABXY layout can be challenging for players accustomed to the standard Switch face button arrangement.

While playing various games, the sticks, shoulder buttons, and gyro worked flawlessly, although some muscle memory adjustment may be required for certain titles. Connecting the controller to the GameCube hardware was straightforward and the response felt on par with a wired GC controller. The Warrior is a versatile controller that can also be used with PCs and other devices, offering a wireless experience with good responsiveness.

Overall, the NYXI Warrior Bluetooth Controller delivers on its promise of being a high-quality Pro Controller alternative with a retro feel. Its only notable downside is the unconventional ABXY layout, which may pose a challenge for some players.
