AMD Bringing FSR 4 to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in 2025
AMD has officially announced a partnership with Activision to introduce the FSR 4 upscaling tool to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in 2025. This collaboration solidifies the shift to AI for FSR, as confirmed by Team Red’s Vice President, Jack Huynh.
In a recent video unveiling the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Huynh also confirmed the accuracy of the rumors and spec leaks circulating earlier in the week. Along with the new processor, AMD plans to enhance FSR 3.1 for Black Ops 6 and work closely with Activision to implement the ‘next generation of ML-based FSR’ in the game next year.
The introduction of AI-driven FSR 4 raises questions about its functionality compared to DLSS and PSSR, which utilize AI for resolution upscaling. While AMD has previously avoided AI in FSR, Huynh mentioned that handheld gaming PCs will benefit from improved battery life with AI-based frame interpolation.
Not only will this benefit handheld gaming, but it also presents a potential improvement for desktop PC gamers using mid-range GPUs. With AMD focusing on machine learning for FSR 4, users can anticipate enhanced performance in Fluid Motion Frames and the upscaling tool itself.
Will this help AMD GPUs compete with Nvidia’s?
The growing importance of frame generation and AI upscaling in PC gaming experiences is evident. Nvidia’s DLSS has traditionally outperformed AMD’s FSR, potentially drawing PC gamers to the RTX 4000 series which features DLSS 3.
With a new upscaling technology on the horizon, AMD has an opportunity to compete in the GPU market. FSR 4 could provide the necessary boost for strong yet affordable performance on mid-range and budget cards, shifting the focus away from high-end GPUs.
If AMD’s leaked CES 2025 lineup holds true, we may witness a significant advancement in the GPU department and other next-gen hardware categories. It’s an exciting time for Team Red as they strive to solidify their presence in the market.
