New Virtua Fighter Is In Development At Sega, Exec Confirms

Sega Announces New Virtua Fighter Game in Development

Last year at The Game Awards, Sega unveiled plans for new entries in classic franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and Streets Of Rage. Now, another beloved Sega series is set to make a comeback as an executive has confirmed that a new Virtua Fighter game is currently in active development.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown (2021)

Speaking to VGC, Justin Scarpone, executive VP and head of Sega’s Global Transmedia Group, announced the new Virtua Fighter project. While no specific details were provided about the upcoming game, Scarpone did mention that it is part of a suite of upcoming titles that also includes Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi.

“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards,” Scarpone said. “Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”

If the new Virtua Fighter game is not a remake or reboot, it will be the sixth installment in the iconic fighting franchise that revolutionized 3D-based fighters when it first launched in 1993. The most recent game in the series, Virtua Fighter 5, was originally released for home consoles in 2007 and later remastered in 2021.

Sega’s transmedia approach has seen success with projects like the Sonic The Hedgehog movie released in 2020 and upcoming sequels. Other recent Sega releases include the Yakuza: Like A Dragon series on Amazon Prime Video, Sonic X Shadow Generations on consoles and PC, and Metaphor: ReFantazio from the Atlus division.
