WayForward’s RetroRealms: Double Feature Review
“Groovy…”
California based indie dev: WayForward brings a spooky treat just in time for the peak of spooky season with RetroRealms: Double Feature. This old-school rendition features two horror icons: Ashley Williams and Michael Meyers in a unique 3D hub space that doubles as a spooky arcade on a stormy night. Offering two 16-bit-style platformers inspired by John Carpenter’s Halloween and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, RetroRealms was released on Xbox Series S/X, PC, Switch, and PlayStation 5 on October 17, 2025. In this review, I will delve into my experience with the PlayStation 5 version, exploring the good, critiquing the bad, and determining if it’s worth the £39.99 price tag on the UK PSN Store.
When it comes to gaming, few genres are as iconic as the platformer. From the classic days of the SEGA Mega Drive to the modern indie scene, the platformer gameplay style has remained a fan favorite. As someone who grew up playing horror games like Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen and Resident Evil, platformers were not initially a part of my gaming experience. However, the fusion of horror and platformers has always intrigued me, especially with games like Little Nightmares. RetroRealms offers a unique twist by combining two beloved horror IPs, Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead, in a nostalgic 16-bit art style.
RetroRealms Gameplay and Story
In RetroRealms, players enter a dusty abandoned arcade where they can choose to play two distinct games inspired by Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Taking control of either Michael Myers or Ashley Williams, players embark on their own unique journeys through creepy levels filled with enemies and obstacles. The game’s vibrant art style captures the essence of classic gaming, immersing players in nostalgic environments reminiscent of the TV show and classic movies.
Dead by dawn: RetroRealms’ art style and locations offer a nostalgic callback to scenes from both the TV show and the classic movies of each respective IP.
Gameplay and Replayability
RetroRealms offers traditional 2D platformer gameplay where players navigate levels, defeat enemies, and collect items. The game’s mechanics allow players to switch between dimensions, adding a unique twist to the typical platformer experience. While the game’s retro charm and atmospheric design are commendable, the overall gameplay can feel tedious and repetitive, especially when playing with slower characters like Michael Myers.
The night he came home: Familiar environments from Haddonfield are present in RetroRealms: Halloween.
While RetroRealms: Double Feature excels in its visual and atmospheric presentation, the gameplay loop may not appeal to all players. Priced at £19.99 each or £39.99 as a bundle, the game offers limited content for its price. With only five stages per game and limited replay value, RetroRealms may struggle to justify its cost for all players.
