Valve Rumored to be Developing New Steam and VR Controllers
Valve is rumored to be in the works on a new Steam Controller and a new VR controller, according to YouTuber Brad Lynch.
Lynch shared insider information on X / Twitter, suggesting that Valve is currently working on a Steam Controller 2, codenamed “Ibex”, as well as a separate VR controller codenamed “Roy”.
Both controllers are said to be in the “later stages of production” and are being prepared for mass production in Valve’s factories.
The Roy controller is expected to feature a D-pad, bumpers, group buttons, triggers, an ABXY button layout, and some form of strap, based on references found in Valve’s SteamVR code.
Lynch stated, “I am confident in this info based on datamining AND sources who wished not to be named. There is also an unreleased OpenXR extension for these controllers.”
While specifics about the Steam Controller 2 remain scarce, Lynch mentioned that it will resemble a standard gamepad. One major change will be the shape and size of the trackpads to give it a more gamepad-like form, along with symmetrical sticks.
Valve has not officially confirmed the development of these new controllers, so the release date is still uncertain if the rumors turn out to be accurate.
