Apple’s Latest AirPods: A Controversial Review
Apple’s two newest pairs of earbuds, the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC, have sparked mixed reactions among tech experts. Some are critical while others are praising the latest additions to Apple’s wearable lineup. Initially skeptical myself, I was pleasantly surprised by the improvements Apple made to these new buds, especially in terms of audio quality and active noise cancellation for the higher-end version. While they may not yet rival Sony or Sennheiser, these new AirPods offer a lot for iPhone users.
Editor’s Note: This review focuses on the AirPods 4 with ANC, but we’ve included comparisons and insights from testing the standard AirPods 4 as well.

Design and Features
Both the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC maintain Apple’s iconic semi-open earbud design. While there have been some refinements over past generations, the overall design remains consistent. Notably, the cases for both models are smaller than their predecessors.
Internally, the AirPods 4 feature a new H2 chip that adapts to the environment to enhance audio and call quality. They also boast IP54 weather resistance, providing protection against dust, sweat, and water. This improved weatherproofing sets them apart from previous models and instills more confidence for outdoor use.
Performance
As someone who has been critical of AirPods in the past, I was pleasantly surprised by the audio quality of the AirPods 4 and 4 with ANC. Both versions delivered well-balanced sound with excellent detail, enhancing the listening experience across various genres. The custom-designed low-distortion driver excelled in handling deep bass, creating a rich audio experience.
The AirPods 4 with ANC offered slightly better audio quality and noise cancellation compared to the standard AirPods 4, effectively blocking out unwanted background noise. While silicon-tipped earbuds may have an edge in noise cancellation, the AirPods 4 performed admirably in real-world scenarios, making them a versatile choice for daily use.
Both versions of the AirPods 4 feature Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking, enhancing the immersive audio experience. While subjective, this technology provides a three-dimensional audio environment for compatible content.
The Competition
For Apple users, choosing between the AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2 can be a tough decision due to their seamless integration with Apple devices. The standard AirPods 4 offer a compelling option for those who do not require noise cancellation, providing similar features at a lower price point.
Comparing the AirPods 4 with ANC to the AirPods Pro 2, the latter offers superior audio quality, comfort, and noise cancellation. However, the price difference may not justify the upgrade for most users, as the AirPods 4 with ANC deliver a solid performance at a more affordable price point.
For Android users, alternative options from brands like Sony, Sennheiser, and Jabra may offer better value and compatibility. Unless deeply committed to Apple’s ecosystem, other brands may provide a more tailored experience for non-iOS users.
