IllFonic Announces Layoffs as Company Realigns Strategy
IllFonic, the developer behind Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, recently made the tough decision to implement layoffs as part of a strategic realignment. In a statement shared on social media, IllFonic CEO Charles Brungardt acknowledged the impact of industry challenges on the company.
Brungardt expressed his sentiments, stating, “Today, we had to accept the harsh reality that the state of the industry has impacted us here at IllFonic… It is with the heaviest of hearts that cuts to our teams had to be made today as we realigned to a refined strategy.” He also highlighted the talent within the team, encouraging other companies with job openings to consider connecting with those affected by the layoffs.
IllFonic, with studios in Golden, Colorado and Tacoma, Washington, gained recognition for its asymmetrical multiplayer horror title, Friday the 13th: The Game. Despite its success, the game was removed from sale in December after licensing issues. The developer later introduced Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game this year, but has faced challenges in retaining player engagement, as indicated by a decline in Steam concurrents.
The exact number of employees affected by the recent layoffs at IllFonic has not been disclosed. This news adds to a concerning trend in the games industry, with an estimated 14,000 job losses reported in 2024. Industry expert Chris Dring previously shared insights on the factors contributing to this trend earlier in the year.
