Five Resident Evil games tested on PS5 Pro – and the upgrades are substantial

PS5 Pro Enhance Resident Evil Series Performance

Among the various PS5 Pro upgrades that have been tested, the Resident Evil series stands out as one of the most impressive beneficiaries of Sony’s new hardware. The series includes Resident Evil 7 from 2017, the remakes of RE 2 and 3, Resident Evil Village, and the most recent addition, Resident Evil 4 Remake. Powered by Capcom’s in-house RE Engine, all five games run as native PS5 apps. However, there have been some performance limitations on the base PS5, such as challenges with using RT features at 60fps or enabling a 120Hz HFR mode. The introduction of the PS5 Pro addresses these issues by providing increased GPU power and more advanced PSSR upscaling, bridging the gap to achieve optimal frame-rate targets.

Starting with a focus on RE Village, the only game to receive PSSR upscaling, we see a fixed resolution of 1536×864 on PS5 Pro, reconstructed to 4K using PSSR in all modes. While the image quality may not be as sharp as the native 1920×2160 resolution on base PS5, the use of PSSR offers temporal stability. However, there are some drawbacks, such as blurred hair detail in motion. Moving on to frame-rate testing, PS5 Pro delivers a stable 60fps experience with RT engaged in RE Village, providing improved shadows, lighting, and reflections. The new 120Hz high frame-rate mode on PS5 Pro impressively hits its target FPS, especially when RT is disabled.

PS5 Pro Performance in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake also sees significant performance gains on PS5 Pro, maintaining a 60fps frame rate even with all visual enhancements enabled. PS5 Pro offers a resolution mode of 2160p and a performance mode of around 1944p, with the optional inclusion of RT reflections. The new 120Hz HFR mode is a notable addition, demonstrating improvements in frame rates compared to the base PS5, especially in combat and cut-scenes. While the resolution mode and RT combination on PS5 Pro deliver stable 60fps performance, the 120Hz option may show varying results, making it a good option for some gameplay scenarios with a VRR display recommended for the best experience.

Performance Improvements Across the Series

Other titles in the RE Engine series, including RE7, RE2, and RE3 remakes, also benefit from the extra GPU power of PS5 Pro, resulting in enhanced performance and frame rates. Even without official PS5 Pro upgrades, these games see automatic improvements, especially with RT enabled in RE2 and RE3. PS5 Pro ensures a smoother gameplay experience with locked 60fps performance in most instances, offering significant frame rate improvements compared to the base PS5. While not all titles have official PS5 Pro enhancements, the overall performance improvements across the Resident Evil series showcase the capabilities of the new hardware.
