Bandai Namco’s Tales Series Celebrates 30th Anniversary
Bandai Namco has commenced its 30th-anniversary celebrations for the Tales series with the Anniversary Project Special Broadcast. Although no groundbreaking announcements were made, series producer Yusuke Tomizawa reiterated the team’s commitment to developing more remasters.
According to a report by Gematsu on the original Japanese broadcast, Tomizawa-san hinted at plans to “provide [remastered games] fairly consistently” in the future.
The developers unveiled the Anniversary Project shortly after announcing Tales of Graces f Remastered, marking the beginning of efforts to bring older titles in the series to modern platforms. Graces f Remastered will be the first release in this series, scheduled for launch in January 2025.
During the broadcast, Tomizawa-san confirmed the establishment of a development roadmap for the Remastered Project and highlighted the team’s dedication. Additionally, an English 30th Anniversary website is now live, following the earlier launch of the Japanese site.
In a separate English stream titled the 2024 Tales of Anniversary Celebration, little new information was shared, but Graces f producer Yuki Ishikawa addressed a fan query about remastering 2D games in the series. Ishikawa expressed that converting a game from 2D to 3D is not always the only correct course of action, noting the unique charm of pixel art.
While there are no current announcements regarding new remasters or remakes, fans can anticipate future releases. More information is likely to be revealed next year, but for now, Tales of Graces f Remastered is set to launch on January 17, 2025.
Tales of Phantasia Celebrates 29th Anniversary
Over the weekend in Japan, Tales of Phantasia observed its 29th birthday. Originally released on the Super Famicom on December 15, 1995, Phantasia holds the distinction of being the inaugural title in the Tales series. Western audiences have only seen the game on the GBA to date.
In North America, fans first encountered the franchise on PlayStation through Tales of Destiny, which received a Japan-exclusive PS2 remake. Meanwhile, European players were introduced to the series via GameCube with Tales of Symphonia. The latest entry in the series, Tales of Arise, debuted on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in 2021.
Earlier this year, rumors circulated about a Switch release of Tales of Xillia, sparking conjecture about the possibility of a rerelease for the PS3 exclusive. While Graces f was ultimately confirmed, speculation remains regarding the potential remaster of the Xillia duo.
