NYT Connections today (game #558) – the answers
Behold, the answers for today’s Connections, game #558, are:
- YELLOW: CONCOCTION – COCKTAIL, COMPOUND, MIXTURE, SOLUTION
- GREEN: TYPES OF SENTENCES – COMMAND, EXCLAMATION, QUESTION, STATEMENT
- BLUE: KINDS OF BROS – CRYPTO, FINANCE, PHARMA, TECH
- PURPLE: COMPLAINT HOMOPHONES – GROWN, MOWN, WHALE, WINE
- My rating: Hard
- My score: 1 mistake
Today was a unique challenge for me as I stumbled upon the Purple group first. Homophones can be tricky, but reading the words aloud often helps me crack them – a strategy you might want to try (quietly) at work to impress your colleagues.
It’s also handy to have a keen eye for spelling, as sometimes a simple error like confusing “whine” with “wine” or “wail” with “whale” can lead you to the right group. Personally, I excel in spelling and grammar, like nailing TYPES OF SENTENCES last – but is it all part of the game? (QUESTION) Absolutely! (EXCLAMATION)
Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Thursday, 19 December, game #557)
- YELLOW: DEFER – DELAY, POSTPONE, SHELVE, TABLE
- GREEN: BAR FIXTURES – COUNTER, KEG, STOOL, TAP
- BLUE: WATERCRAFT – BARGE, JUNK, SUB, TUG
- PURPLE: SEEN IN “DONKEY KONG” – BARREL, GORILLA, HAMMER, LADDER
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is a popular word game series offered by the New York Times. It tasks players with discovering groups of four items that share a commonality, each group varying in difficulty: green for easy, yellow for a moderate challenge, blue for a tough one, and purple for the most challenging.
Although solving the final group is not mandatory, you can logically deduce the answers through process of elimination. Plus, you’re allowed up to four mistakes, giving you some leeway.
While more complex than games like Wordle, NYT Connections presents numerous opportunities for tricky twists. Keep an eye out for homophones and other wordplay that could mask the solutions.
Accessible for free on the NYT Games site, you can enjoy playing Connections on desktop or mobile devices.
