Ben Schwartz is gearing up to reprise his role as Sonic in the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Since his debut in the first Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020, Schwartz has become synonymous with the beloved blue hedgehog. However, when asked about his favorite video game character of all time, Schwartz surprised fans by choosing a character from the classic 1995 RPG Chrono Trigger.
Speaking with IGN, Schwartz revealed that Frog, the anthropomorphic hero from Chrono Trigger, holds a special place in his heart. He reminisced about Frog’s iconic giant broadsword, describing it as “one of the coolest things of all time.” Schwartz went on to express his deep admiration for Chrono Trigger, labeling it as his all-time favorite video game.
Reflecting on the game, Schwartz praised its extraordinary soundtrack and captivating story. He emphasized how each character in Chrono Trigger was unique, unlike in other RPGs where some characters may feel unnecessary. Schwartz expressed how emotionally invested he was in every character throughout his gameplay experience.
In a previous interview in 2021, Schwartz commended former Sonic voice actor Roger Craig Smith and revealed that he was not approached to take over the role in the games. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Schwartz’s castmate Keanu Reeves voices Shadow in the recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack DLC for Sonic x Shadow Generations. Director Jeff Fowler mentioned that Reeves dedicated time to researching Shadow’s character before taking on the role for the movie.
Fans can catch Ben Schwartz as Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when it hits theaters on Friday, December 20th.
