PS5 Issue Reportedly Caused by Vertical Placement Possibly Fixed

PS5 Pro design addresses concerns with vertical placement

Back in 2023, there were reports circulating about potential issues with PS5 consoles placed in a vertical position. It was said that a design flaw could cause liquid metal used for cooling to spill over, leading to damage. These reports caused quite a stir, with many questioning their validity. However, a recent teardown video of the PS5 Pro suggests that Sony may have quietly addressed this problem, if it was indeed real.

Technical YouTube channel How-FixIT pointed out that the PS5 Pro’s heat sink block now features surface ridges that come in contact with the liquid metal. This design helps to keep the liquid metal evenly distributed over the APU chip, reducing the risk of spillage and potential overheating. In comparison, the standard PS5’s heat sink block is completely flat.

Reports about the potential issue first emerged before the release of the PS5 Slim, but both the original PS5 and PS5 Slim were said to have heat sink blocks that could contribute to liquid metal spills when placed vertically. Although there are still debates about the accuracy of these reports, the introduction of ridges on the PS5 Pro’s heat sink block suggests that Sony may have taken steps to address the issue.
