PlayStation Classics porters Implicit Conversions is “dreaming about” PS3 emulation – potentially for PS5
That’s according to the developer’s roadmap
PS3 games are currently only available via cloud streaming on PS5
Retro game port developer Implicit Conversions seems to be exploring the idea of proper PS3 emulation, possibly for the PlayStation Classics collection accessible through PS Plus on the PS5.
As per the developer’s roadmap, which was discovered on the r/GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit (via VGC), there is a section labeled ‘Dreaming About’ on the far left. In this section, there is a card for “Researching and prototyping the possibility of a PlayStation 3 emulator package for Syrup.” Syrup is the developer’s own emulation engine used to bring classic games to modern hardware.
Currently, PS3 games can be played on PS5, but only through cloud game streaming. This often results in a subpar gaming experience, particularly for players with slower internet connections. The PS5 is still lacking native support for the PS3 generation, unlike the availability of PS4, PS1, and PS2 games for download on the system.
It’s disappointing that many excellent PS3 games remain exclusive to the console without any re-release, including titles like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Tokyo Jungle, and Ridge Racer 7, a personal favorite.
However, it’s important to temper expectations as PS3 emulation on PS5 is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Implicit Conversions has placed it in a separate ‘dreaming about’ tab on its roadmap, indicating that the technology is not currently in active development.
Nevertheless, the fact that the roadmap is publicly available is a positive sign. It shows that those responsible for porting classic games to modern hardware are considering PS3 emulation and are aware of the demand. While it may take several years to materialize, it’s a step in the right direction.
