Assassin’s Creed Shadows adding the ability to go prone has prompted a rethink of the series’ usual controls

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Introduces New Parkour Controls

Ubisoft’s upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, brings a fresh twist to the franchise’s parkour system with a major change in controls. The addition of the ability to go prone has led to a reconfiguration of the traditional controls players are accustomed to.

The blog published by Ubisoft today delves into the details of Shadows’ parkour system, highlighting the key changes in control schemes. One significant adjustment is the swapping of the crouch and dodge buttons, now mapped differently to accommodate the new prone feature.

With the prone ability now linked to the X button on a standard Xbox controller, players can easily transition between crouching and going prone by tapping or holding the X button, respectively. The B button is now designated for dodging, rolling, and dropping down during parkour sequences.

New Parkour Moves and Techniques

According to Shadows’ associate game director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, the integration of dodge and parkour down mechanics unlocks a range of innovative parkour moves. This new control mapping separates stance-switching from parkour actions, offering enhanced flexibility in movement.

Players can expect the return of classic Assassin’s Creed parkour maneuvers, such as the recovery roll to soften landings and reduce noise. Additionally, a directional dodge over ledges adds a stylish flair to descending from heights.

For those worried about fall damage, an additional prompt when descending during parkour sequences ensures a safer landing. Of course, iconic haystacks remain strategically placed to cushion these impactful landings.

Improved Climbing Mechanics and Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces a significant shift in climbing mechanics by limiting climbable surfaces. This change emphasizes the importance of identifying physical handholds on surfaces, requiring players to approach navigation more strategically.

Lemay-Comtois elaborates on the deliberate design choices made to create diverse parkour pathways, enhancing the contrast between the two playable characters, Naoe and Yasuke.

Set to release on February 14th after a notable delay, Assassin’s Creed Shadows promises an immersive experience with intriguing gameplay mechanics. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated title!
