Minecraft adds new pig variants, ambient falling leaves, wildflowers, and more for public testing

Exciting New Features Coming to Minecraft in 2025

With the holiday season behind us and the new year in full swing, Mojang has announced the release of six new features for public testing in preparation for Minecraft’s first update of 2025. This comes as part of Mojang’s shift towards more frequent, smaller content updates throughout the year, moving away from the traditional massive summer updates.

The upcoming update introduces two new pig variants – the cold pig and warm pig, designed to inhabit sub-zero biomes and sandy biomes respectively. This addition aims to enhance the diversity of pig variants available in the game after 15 years of the standard pig.

In addition to the new pig variants, forest biomes are receiving a significant upgrade with the inclusion of three ambient features: falling leaves, leaf litter, and wildflowers. Falling leaves will be present in all forest biomes, while leaf litter, which can be used for decoration and emits a crunching sound when stepped on, will be exclusively found in dark forests and wooded badlands.

Wildflowers, another new feature, will be scattered across meadows and birch forests, appearing in yellow and white colors that can be crafted into dyes. These flowers have different growth stages that can be hastened with bonemeal, and they bloom in unique patterns based on their placement angles.

Furthermore, the update will simplify the crafting recipe for lodestones, making it easier for players to create these magnetized blocks that attract compasses for navigation purposes.

While these new features are set to be part of Minecraft’s next update, they are currently available for public testing in Minecraft’s latest Java snapshot. Most of the additions can also be found in the Bedrock preview and beta versions, with the exception of leaf litter and wildflowers, which will be added to Bedrock soon.
