A seasoned analyst predicts that if the Nintendo Switch 2 is released in the first half of 2025, the sales of the PS5 will surpass those of the console in the United States. Mat Piscatella from Circana also anticipates supply limitations that could last for several months due to the high initial demand for Nintendo’s highly awaited next-generation console.
The Possibility of PS5 Outselling Switch 2 in the US
Piscatella did not provide detailed reasoning behind his belief that the PS5 will outsell the Switch 2 in its initial year, focusing mainly on supply constraints and a potential late 2025 release. It remains to be seen whether his forecast will hold true if Nintendo does not face any hardware limitations.
The forecast is indeed ambitious considering that the PS5 is already in the latter stages of its lifespan. However, if GTA 6 is launched this year, there is expected to be a significant increase in demand for Sony’s console.
According to Piscatella’s statement on Bluesky, “I anticipate that Nintendo’s next hardware device will sell 4.3 million units in the US in 2025 (assuming a first-half launch), comprising roughly one-third of all video game console hardware units sold that year (excluding PC Portables). The number of units sold will ultimately depend on manufacturing capabilities. Nonetheless, I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in total hardware units sold in the US for the year.”
