Lord of the Rings Games on Nintendo Consoles in 2025
The year is 2025 and Lord of the Rings is making a strong comeback. With The Rings of Power on TV, the War of the Rohirrim in theaters, and a ‘Hunt for Gollum‘ movie in the works, the Middle Earth universe is thriving once again. Additionally, more games set in this fantastical realm are on the horizon.
Although Gollum was released on various consoles in 2023, the Switch version is still pending due to Daedalic shutting down its internal development team. However, fans can look forward to Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game, set to grace the Switch in March. With Embracer Group now in control of the IP, it’s likely that more gaming adventures are in store.
Reflecting on the past, it’s evident that the Lord of the Rings franchise has seen its fair share of video game adaptations. From the popular ‘Mordor‘ series with its innovative Nemesis System to various movie tie-ins, the realm of Middle Earth has been well explored in the gaming world. However, not every attempt has been a success, reminding us of the famous quote, “All that is gold does not glitter”.
Despite the abundance of games, the lack of RPGs based on Lord of the Rings for Nintendo consoles has been a point of contention. The absence of ports for titles like Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War on the Switch is a sore point for fans. Instead, Nintendo loyalists have had to make do with movie tie-ins, LEGO games, and the occasional standout like The Third Age.
