Dynasty Warriors has been a beloved series for many gamers, offering the thrill of epic battles and the excitement of being a powerful warrior in ancient China. With each new installment, fans have come to expect the same kingdom-spanning tale and the exhilarating “1v1000” combat that defines the series.
Having discovered the series with Dynasty Warriors 2, I have spent the last 25 years returning to this familiar world, developing favorites among the vast cast of characters. So, it was with great curiosity that I delved into the 10th mainline installment – Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
A Deeper Storytelling Experience
Dynasty Warriors: Origins takes a bold step by going back to basics and reinventing the series in a way that surpasses the incremental changes seen in previous versions. The game focuses on telling a deeper, more focused story, shedding light on the origins of the familiar tale that fans have come to love.
In the first chapter of Origins, players are taken through the formation, corruption, and downfall of the Yellow Turbans faction, a significant event in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This fresh perspective serves as an origin story for the series’ traditional narrative, offering a new angle on a familiar plot.
A New Protagonist and Gameplay Experience
One of the most significant changes in Origins is the introduction of a new protagonist, allowing players to embody an amnesiac traveling warrior with a mysterious past. Unlike previous Dynasty Warriors games where players could choose from various officers, Origins focuses on this singular character’s journey, providing a more personal and immersive experience.
While the game moves away from the open-world format of its predecessor, Dynasty Warriors 9, it offers a more flexible Story Mode. Players can now explore an overworld between main levels, discover secrets, customize their loadout, interact with officers, and participate in skirmishes to level up.
Enhanced Combat Mechanics
Origins retains the classic hack ‘n’ slash action that fans love while introducing new elements to combat. Blocks, parries, and evades are more crucial when facing enemy bosses, and certain battles now include miniature puzzle elements. Additionally, customizable Battle Art special abilities allow players to tailor their playstyle to each weapon type.
This balance between old and new defines Origins’ approach, offering a fresh take on the familiar Dynasty Warriors formula. While still providing the comfort of the series, the game introduces new ingredients that add depth and complexity to the overall experience.
