Expanding Repairability and Reducing Environmental Impact
At Xbox, we are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and contributing to Microsoft’s goal of becoming a zero waste, carbon negative, and water positive company by 2030. By innovating how we design, build, distribute, and repair our products, we aim to create a more sustainable future for gaming while also benefiting our community of players.
Enhanced Repairability and Reduced Plastic Waste
Xbox is expanding its repairability program to offer players more options for repairing their Xbox Series X|S consoles. Starting January 20, uBreakiFix by Asurion will become the first Xbox Authorized Service Provider to offer in-person console repairs at nearly 700 locations across the U.S. This program provides players with additional avenues for repairs, reducing waste and promoting a longer lifespan for Xbox devices.
In addition to enhanced repair services, replacement components for Xbox Series X|S consoles are now available for purchase through the Microsoft Store and online via the iFixit Repair Hub. These options empower players to choose the repair solution that best suits their needs, even if their console is out of warranty.
Minimizing Carbon Impact through Energy Efficiency
Xbox has been actively reducing its carbon footprint through energy-efficient updates to its consoles. Recent interventions have already prevented over 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e emissions, equivalent to more than 3 billion car miles. By improving energy efficiency in Xbox Series S consoles, we have seen a significant reduction in power consumption across all media apps, contributing to Microsoft’s sustainability goals.
To take advantage of these energy-saving features, ensure the “Shutdown (energy saving)” option is active in your console settings.
Promoting Sustainability Through Collaboration
Xbox is committed to working with game studios and industry partners to drive sustainability in gaming. By leveraging the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit and implementing energy-efficient practices in game development, we aim to reduce environmental impact while preserving the gaming experiences our players love. Through collaboration and innovation, we can build a more sustainable future for gaming.
While the path to achieving our environmental goals may not be straightforward, Xbox remains dedicated to empowering game creators and production teams with the tools and solutions needed to create a more sustainable gaming industry.
