Watch out, this convincing Steam scam could risk your entire game library

A new phishing scam targeting Steam users has emerged

PC gamers should be on high alert as a new scam is making the rounds on the popular Steam platform. This scam poses a significant risk to user accounts and the safety of their game libraries.

Reddit users recently discovered the scam, which involves receiving a phishing link through direct messages. The message falsely claims to be an official playtest invitation for the unreleased game Mafia: The Old Country. The deceptive text urges recipients to click a link to add the playtest to their Steam Library.

While the link preview may display the game’s logo and mention the playtest, a closer look reveals that it is not a legitimate Steam store link. Although the specific page associated with this scam has been removed, it serves as a cautionary tale for Steam users.

Clicking on such malicious links could lead to a fake login page designed to steal account credentials or initiate downloads for harmful software. The consequences of falling victim to this scam can range from losing access to your account to compromising sensitive personal information.

It is crucial to approach any message containing links with caution, even if it appears to come from a trusted source. Steam’s official playtest invite system is rarely used, and legitimate invitations will appear in the user’s Steam notifications tab rather than as direct messages.
