Peter Dinklage’s buried superhero movie is finally coming in 2025

Cineverse Unleashes ‘The Toxic Avenger’ in Unrated Theatrical Debut

Cineverse revealed plans to release The Toxic Avenger later this year with an unrated wide theatrical launch. The highly-anticipated movie features Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones as Winston Gooze, a janitor who undergoes a bizarre transformation into a mutant vigilante known as “Toxie” following a freak accident. Like other superhero figures, Toxie emerges as an unexpected savior, taking on various adversaries such as gangsters and corrupt executives, all while wielding his trusty mop.

‘The Toxic Avenger’: A Gnarly Reboot

Directed by Macon Blair, known for his roles in Blue Ruin and I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, the film serves as a reboot of the 1984 cult classic. According to reviewer Tasha Robinson, who previewed the movie at Austin’s Fantastic Fest in 2023, the film is described as “gnarly, messy, and packed with goofy visual gags and fight scenes where the combatants get melted or mutated, sometimes exploding into wall-splattering showers of vivid, chunky gore.”

Despite being viewable in 2023, the film experienced delays in receiving a wide release. Achieving a remarkable 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes during its festival circuit in 2023, The Toxic Avenger encountered distribution challenges, leaving its fate uncertain for some time.

Cineverse’s Strategic Move

Cineverse’s decision to bring The Toxic Avenger to theaters aligns with the company’s track record of success in transforming the Terrifier series into a thriving horror franchise. The 2024 installment, Terrifier 3, notably became the highest-grossing non-rated film in U.S. history. Director Macon Blair expressed excitement about the upcoming release, stating, “It’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family!”
