Avowed shows off its character creator and the backgrounds that “will shape how the world responds to you”

Avowed Character Creation Menu Revealed

Avowed offers players the opportunity to customize not only their character’s appearance but also their background, which will influence how the game world interacts with them.

Obsidian shared a glimpse of the Character Creation menu on X/Twitter, showcasing options such as Arcade Scholar, Court Augur, Vanguard Scout, War Hero, and Noble Scion. Each background choice affects the dialogue options and starting weapons available to players as they begin their journey.

According to Obsidian’s teaser on social media, players will come from the Aedyran Empire with mysterious origins tied to a godly influence. The background choice in the Character Creation menu will play a significant role in shaping how the world perceives and reacts to the player.

The Noble Scion background, for example, provides a glimpse into the character’s backstory and influence:

“You were born to a noble house of great influence, middling wealth, and questionable morals. When scandals and succession disputes saw your family cast down, you threw yourself on the emperor’s mercy, and he shielded you. Canny yet refined, you have become a formidable force at court and an invaluable ally to the emperor.”

Despite the background choices, players need not worry about missing out on equipment and abilities found in the game. Obsidian ensures that all equipment and abilities are accessible to players regardless of their chosen background.

Avowed is set to release on 18th February for PC (Steam and Battle.net) and Xbox Series X/S. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers will have day-one access, with the Premium Edition offering early access five days before the official release for £90 or $90.

Xbox highlighted Obsidian’s commitment to player freedom in Avowed during a recent Developer Direct: ” ‘Your worlds, your way’ isn’t just a motto for Obsidian – it’s how they design quests, regions, combat, and more, making it a quintessential ‘Obsidian RPG’.”

In Eurogamer’s preview of Avowed, the experience was compared favorably to The Outer Worlds, with a hint of mystery surrounding the game’s originality: “Avowed does a lot of things that I like, and I enjoyed my time with it, more than I ever enjoyed The Outer Worlds. That said, nothing I saw stood out as wildly original, or that Avowed could entirely call its own.”

As the launch date approaches, the question remains whether Avowed will deliver a unique solution to stand out in the RPG genre.
