Xbox Could Successfully Follow Sega’s Footsteps, Says Ex Sony Boss

Former Sony Exec Shawn Layden Praises Xbox’s New Multiplatform Strategy

Former Sony executive Shawn Layden recently shared his thoughts on Xbox’s new approach to making their games available on multiple platforms.

During an interview on the podcast Kiwi Talkz, Layden commended Xbox for expanding the reach of its games. He pointed out that in a rapidly evolving industry where development costs are on the rise, releasing games on multiple platforms can increase the potential audience. He also highlighted the historical precedent for this strategy, citing Sega’s decision to bring Dreamcast titles to PlayStation 2.

Layden emphasized the importance of creating a sense of exclusivity and FOMO (fear of missing out) in marketing strategies. He acknowledged the challenge of maintaining this exclusivity when games are available on various platforms, but he also recognized the benefits of reaching a wider audience.

Reflecting on Sega’s transition from a hardware to a software-only company, Layden noted the success of this transformation and how it serves as a relevant example in the industry. He discussed the potential implications of Xbox’s move to bring titles like Forza Horizon 5 to non-Microsoft platforms.

According to reports, Xbox is planning to introduce Halo: The Master Chief Collection and a rumored Gears of War Collection to PlayStation platforms, further expanding the availability of their iconic franchises.
